"Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere!"

That's the message during Fire Prevention Week 2018.

From Oct. 7 to 13, 2018, fire departments from across Canada and the United States will work to raise public awareness about the dangers of fire, how to prevent it and how to keep your family safe by having - and practicing - an escape plan. Click here for more information.

Fire Prevention Week 2016

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” represents the final year of our three-year effort to educate the public about basic but essential elements of smoke alarm safety.

Why focus on smoke alarms three years in a row? Because NFPA’s survey data shows that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire. For example, only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced.

As a result of those and related findings, we’re addressing smoke alarm replacement this year with a focus on these key messages:

  • ⦁ Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
  • ⦁ Make sure you know how old all the smoke alarms are in your home.
  • ⦁ To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.
  • Okanagan Restoration Services as part of our ongoing community commitment will be assisting the Vernon Fire Rescue Service during Fire Prevention week to check and install smoke alarms in 150 manufactured homes in the North Okanagan. This program has been undertaken for several years in conjunction with Silver Star Rotary and VFRS.

    Fire Training with Local Departments

Okanagan Restoration Services has been active this spring and summer assisting provincial fire prevention officers and local fire departments learn more about fire behaviour.

In May ORS carpenters, with material assistance from Rona and Boyd Distributors, constructed 4 eight foot by eight foot rooms which were set up at the Vernon Fire Training Centre. The rooms were outfitted with different furniture and each was set on fire using different accelerants. Fire prevention officers from across the province attending their annual convention were brought in to do mock investigations to determine the cause (s).

In June the Vernon Fire Rescue Service was able to utilize the cubicles again to make a training and educational video. One cubicle was outfitted with a smoke detector, one with a sprinkler and one without any protection or warning devices. The cubes were set ablaze and the outcome showed how important having a working smoke detector and sprinkler protection can be.

In July Coldstream Fire Department with ORS assistance refurbished the cubicles and utilized them again for fire behaviour and fire training purposes.

“This has been a great project and so important for our fire personnel to have a live fire classroom scenario to learn from”, said Kevin Rothwell, Community Relations Manager for ORS.

"We would like to let you know how much we appreciated the quick, professional, and friendly response of your restoration team. It sure took the pressure off of our shoulders, so we could focus our attention on caring for our father. Also your dealing with the Insurance Company was sure a help during that confusing time. Thanks again to your staff for being so cooperative and respectful of our needs."
