Fire & Smoke Damage Do’s and Don’ts

After fire damage it’s natural to want to jump right in and clean the building and contents. Timely action can be a help, but incorrect action can jeopardize or impede satisfactory restoration.

DO…

clean and protect chrome trim on faucets and other brightwork by washing with detergent and applying a coating of Vaseline or oil
blow off or brush-vacuum particles from upholstery, draperies and carpeting
open windows for ventilation if weather permits
empty refrigerator and freezers if electricity is off and prop doors open with a rolled towel or newspaper to allow circulation
pour antifreeze in toilet bowls, tanks, sinks and tub drains to prevent damage if heat is off in the winter
call a plumber to drain and blow out all water lines if heat is off in winter
remove pets to a clean environment if heavy fire residue is present
send a sample group of garments for cleaning and deodorizing in order to observe the results
retain a contractor (Okanagan Restoration Services) to board up open windows roofs or other penetrations in order to prevent additional damage

DO NOT…

wipe or attempt to wash fire residue from walls, ceilings or other absorbent surfaces
use carpeting or upholstered furniture impacted with heavy smoke residues or debris
use food items or canned goods exposed to heat
turn on computers, TVs, stereos or electrical appliances until they have been cleaned and checked

"I just wanted to let you know what a pleasure it has been having the crew at our house over the past 2 weeks. We had a small kitchen fire (almost) on Christmas Eve night. There was some bad smoke smell but we caught it before there were any flames from our wall oven that just decided to overheat. We called our insurance dealer and I talked to the Adjuster to set up a meeting when we returned from our break on the beginning of January. We met with Kyle and Adjuster at the house and discussed what should happen next. After an hour or so from meeting with Kyle the plan was executed with Margo and the whole crew stepping in and completely washing down the house and giving it the clean-up of a lifetime. Your whole crew has been so respectful of the situation and babysitting the animals at the house. Thank you for such great staff that you have; your crew has gone above the call to make a great result from a bad situation. We will be meeting with Kyle next week to go over the last few details, it is nice that your team is professional and takes pride in what they do in these situations.
